Minimalist Approach in Design

Makaila Ratliff

Minimalism is one of those trends that continues to stay relevant. Bare essentials and clean lines keep things simplistic and uncluttered. This gives ample room to enjoy your space. Bare essentials utilize elements such as light and form and accomplished in an open layout. Minimalism can be achieved by a single piece of artwork on a wall or neutral-colored furniture. To maintain this theme, designers focus on form, purity, and simplicity. You are guaranteed to find smooth surfaces and clean lines that emphasize the classification of each piece. Essentially, the goal is to place as little in a room as possible, as each piece will complement the other.

Color Schemes & Décor

The most common color schemes using the minimalist approach are greys, whites, and beiges. Sometimes these colors can lack liveliness; to combat this, you can combine different shades, colors, textiles, multi-purpose furniture, plants, and natural elements.

A sure way of adding texture would be to incorporate rugs, wallpaper, or wool fabrics. Textiles could be in the form of bedding, drapes, cotton, or cushions, which creates a more warm and comforting space. Choosing the right furniture is vital! You don’t want to add too many pieces, so choose furniture that serves multiple uses, like an ottoman with a lid. Further, plants and natural elements are a great way to bring life to a room while sustaining a minimalist approach. The most important part to this approach is leaving empty space and letting light shine through.
